Eligibility Criteria
The baseline academic requirement is a Master’s degree with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade point on a seven-point scale) in a relevant or allied subject from a recognized Indian university, or an equivalent foreign degree with an AIU equivalence certificate. Reserved category candidates get a 5% relaxation, calculated on raw qualifying marks without any grace-mark adjustments. Beyond the Master’s degree, you must satisfy one of the following:
- Cleared NET/SET/SLET, conducted by UGC, CSIR, or an equivalent UGC-recognized test, OR
- Hold a Ph.D. degree awarded under the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2009 or 2016.
Candidates who registered for their Ph.D. before July 11, 2009 are governed by the older regulations of their awarding institution, and are exempted from NET/SLET/SET provided all of these conditions are met:
- The Ph.D. was awarded through regular mode (not distance or online-only).
- The thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners.
- An open viva voce was conducted.
- At least two research papers from the Ph.D. work were published, with a minimum of one in a refereed journal.
- At least two papers based on the Ph.D. work were presented at UGC/ICSSR/CSIR-sponsored conferences or seminars.
Alternatively, a Ph.D. from a foreign university ranked in the top 500 globally by QS, Times Higher Education (THE), or the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) also qualifies for NET exemption.
